Stand Up Against Racism [Revised]

By Jeff Blackwell
Sunday, Oct 12 2008, 07:19 AM

[Added 10-18 3:55PM]

[It has been expressed to me that individuals may not wish to provide their names, thus exposing themselves to public scrutiny.

Because of this possibility, I am inviting you to register using any identity you wish, and sign that identity to the statement "All men and women are created equal."]

Americans across the country, and across the political spectrum, are expressing alarm and dismay at the McCain campaign's tactic of linking Barack Obama with terror and attempting to stoke racial anger and fear.

This tactic has resulted in increasingly violent rhetoric among the crowds at McCain/Palin rallies. I know you have heard it.

Regardless of where you stand politically, with Senator McCain or with Senator Obama, this kind of racially divisive politics must not be allowed to succeed - for the good of our country, for the good of our children.

As I have said, I do not believe that John McCain is personally responsible for this. And much to his credit, Senator McCain has challenged his supporters and repeatedly told them that Senator Obama is a fine American, and a good and decent man who loves his family and his country.

As is Senator McCain.

We all know the sad history of race relations in this country, and there is legitimate fear that some deranged individual could take violent action against Senator Obama, which this nation would long regret.

I ask you, Lake Country;

If you believe that we need to stand up against this tactic of using race to divide and frighten Americans, I respectfully ask you to make yourself visible.

I am asking you to register on this site, and send me your name - your real name - as a comment. and send your comments.

It only has to be your name. If you wish to make a personal statement, by all means do so, but what we want to do is to put our names on record as denouncing [denounce] the use of race as a political issue by any party or campaign.

Please add your name [identity] to this list of Lake Country residents who are re-confirming their belief in this core American value: that all men and women are created equal.

Thank you.

(Remember, I have to personally publish Comments, so your name will not appear immediately.)

When we fill out forms they have a place that we have to check labeled RACE. Given the competitive nature of our society, race implies a first place, second place and so on. Why not relabel that area as ethnic heritage? An observation that will surely irritate some people, why is it that almost 12 hours since the challenge , the only ones that have responded are the "bleeding heart liberals". Where are the "compasionate consevatives"?

36 hours!!!  Still not a single one of the so called compassionate conservatives have aligned themselves on the side of combating racism in Lake Country. How PATHETIC!! What would your reaction be if Sen. Obama was your next door neighbor in addition to being the Democratic nominee for President?  Would you tolerate the blatently racist attacks on your next door neighbor or would you defend him even though you disagreed with his viewpoints!  Your actions say a lot about your character and frankly you fall short!

@ref: Perhaps they are compassionately avoiding it? Or perhaps, the very act of signing a petition that is largely symbolic they conceive as being to liberal? Who knows, perhaps in their worldview, opposing racism will destroy America? Wasn't that the view of 60's conservatives? Yes, it was. The late Jerry Farwell included.

The only person bringing up race is Obama. And why would you label yourself as a proud liberal, then write a letter to the editor of this newspaper saying something like, "i was going to go to this rally, but McCain/Palin crossed the line". WHAT LINE?? We want to know why obama hangs out with terrorists who show no remorse, and wish they would have done more. Ayers didn't make these statements when obama was 8, but he made them on 9/11/01. i think obama was then, around 40. Lets review what's been going on these past 8 years. How many times did i hear the liberal media call George W. Bush "Hitler"? Or "War criminal". Lets see, they made a movie about someone shooting him, and now theres a new one out called "W", which i don't intend to see because i'm guessing, it'll be fabricated garbage. How about you liberals giving President George W. Bush a little credit for keeping us safe these past 8 years. please don't take them for granite, because i have a feeling if your guy wins, you know, the one that brings up his race constantly, (and he's only half black, dude) the terrorists will still try to kill us. And without the Bush policies in place, they'll have a better chance at it. of course, i can hear it now "its Bush's fault this happened, blah blah blah......". And another thing about the ...economy. He did a pretty damn good job on that too. His tax cuts stimulated the economy at a time when America needed it. Yes, even after 9/11. But when our economy was strong, you never heard one thing about it. The media never ever gave Bush credit for anything. If he said blue, the media told everyone it was red. The media has turned into propaganda ..... all the anchors say the same thing, as if they've been given the same talking points, sort of like the ones you got. Our economy started nose diving when the democrats were in charge. It was the democrats that insisted on giving loans to people who couldn't pay them back. But its election time, and its just alot easier to blame everything on George W. Bush. You've heard it "8 years of failed Bush policy". So, don't write some crap letter to the newspaper pretending to be shocked. You know you weren't planning to attend the McCain-Palin rally. I've read what you wrote about her. Why don't you liberals quit pretending that you stand for something, when you don't stand for anything.

I see we finally heard from one of those "compassionate conservatives"  I sure don't want to find out what a "vindictive conservative" would be like!

This is too funny. Does anyone realize what an empty effort this is? One can prove they are not racist by their own actions, not by putting their name on a website. It means nothing. For a comparison, lefties will enjoy this one: Just like attending church doesn't make one a Christian, it is by your good works and leading a good life that will make you a Christian. And maybe, just maybe, no conservatives put their name on this site because no conservatives read Mr. Blackwell! Think that is possible? I do. I haven't checked him out for quite some time. I read his latest column on the usual racism and how he is a guilt-ridden white male living in racist, hateful Lake Country. (Quit beating yourself up, Jeff! Enough already!) His post recommended seeing this post, which I did.

Amy -- follow your own advice -- do good works and lead a good life. Stop the hate and smearing and name calling. Be a good Christian.

Disgusted

@Joan W. -- you seem a little off kilter...

And I'm not sure how to take something for granite.  You mean the granite in my kitchen??

And I have never once heard the media call Bush Hitler.

And basically you are saying that nothing bad that has happened to our ecomony is Bush's fault because he had not control.  But anything good that happened he should get credit for.

You conservatives sure are good at looking for blame, not taking any responsibilty and not being able to try to work together for the good of our country.

Amy L. Geiger-Hemmer

Joan W.: You seem to have exhibited common sense with your comment on this site. Keep up the good work. Lefties can't stand common sense. It goes against what they believe in.

Disgusted: Do you follow me from blog site to blog site? Can't get enought, huh? You keep claiming I "hate and smear" - give me examples sometime, rather than just saying that over and over.

And aren't you the one who said: "Amy you are a terrible person. Period. Someday you will regret how awful you are. I am glad my children are no where near your school." And let's not forget: "Your blogs are filled with hate and offensive things -- sounds like you'd fit right in." Let's keep going with: "At least I am human. You on the other hand..."

Believe it or not, Disgusted, I feel I am a very good person. I love my life, family, country, church, and the opportunities my country has given me. I support my President and am proud to be an American. Too bad there are more people out there who cannot say the same. Who are so bitter and hate-filled that they cannot appreciate what they have. My goal by blogging is to continue to fight for conservative beliefs, which will save this country from ruin.

And as for racism, the topic of Mr. Blackwell's post - fun fact to know and tell - contrary to popular belief, a greater percentage of Republicans voted in favor of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 then Democrats. Yes, the evil, racist, cold-hearted Republicans led the country in approving this act. In the House of Representatives, 80 percent of Republicans voted in favor, while just 63 percent of Democrats did. The actual numbers were 91 Dems voted against the act, while only 35 Republicans. It gets even more interesting. In the Senate, a Democratic Senator (Richard Russell from GA) led the charge AGAINST the Civil Rights Act and tried to stop it. He was supported by only one Republican in his attempted filibuster. The final vote came to 82% of Republicans voting for the bill, while 78% of the Democrats voted against it. How amazing that this little-known fact never seems to get out. The Democrats seem to promote themselves as the most anti-racist party, while painting the Republicans as KKK wanabees. Yet, that sure is far from the truth. And what party has a former KKK member in its ranks? The Democrats - remember Robert Byrd??? The irony of the left never ceases to amaze me. So when we discuss racism, lets not kid ourselves as to what party has done more to fight racism for years - the dreaded Republicans.

So, Amy. Are you signing this statement of racial and gender equality or not?

Do you believe that all men and women should enjoy equal rights under the law, regardless of race?

As an added question; regardless of religion?

Regardless of sexual orientation?

October 21, 2008 3:17 PM

Amy L. Geiger-Hemmer

Sure, Jeff.  But it's an empty gesture.  The signatures on this post mean nothing.  It's like the big Hollywood stars who wear the latest ribbon for the latest "in" cause - empty gestures. They do it because it makes them look good.  Yet, look how those Hollywood lefties live their lives - sex, drugs, divorces, extravagant spending, self-indulgence, and stupidity when it comes to reality - especially regarding politics (wow - Obama should go after their $$$ to spread to the less fortunate for his socialism program!)

Until one follows through with money, volunteering, or living a live supportive of good, signing a petition that has no influence on anything is meaningless.

But, to make you happy, I'll comply with this useless exercise.

Amy -

Why would you sign your name to a meaningless statement?

I am not being facetious. I'd really like to know.

I assume that your name means something to you. Why would you attach it to this statement if the statement is meaningless.

"All men and women are created equal."

Do you support the statement or not?

October 21, 2008 3:39 PM

Amy L. Geiger-Hemmer

Jeff: Of course I support the statement that all men and women are created equal. I signed your meaningless statement because you asked me to. If I had not, I am sure the usual liberal suspects would eagerly accuse me of the usual garbage - racism, bigotry, etc.... So I covered my back. I still think this exercise is useless, and if you read through the signatures it almost seems comical.
