It's Hemmer Time

The left is terrified of Sarah Palin

By Amy L. Geiger-Hemmer
Sunday, Oct 12 2008, 02:58 PM

For whatever reason, the left is terrified of Sarah Palin, the Vice-Presidential nominee for the Republican Party.  Could it be because she has accomplished far more in her career than Democratic nominee for President Barack Obama?  that she has more leadership abilities than Obama?  that she has been a Mayor, a Governor and leader of the Alaskan National Guard of the largest state in our country?   Such glaring differences between Obama and Palin give pause to many.  Yet, how come a Vice-Presidential candidate like Palin is under more scrutiny than  Presidential candidate Obama?  The mainstream media and liberals are bending over backwards to ruin Sarah Palin.   They have questioned how she can do her job AND run a family. ( Last I looked, she had a husband - can't he take care of the kids, too?)  They make fun of the way she speaks.  They attempt to make her out to be a religious wacko.  Remember all the stories on her pregnant daughter, who is soon to be married?  The media reports with disdain that Palin chose to have a child knowing he would be born with  Down's Syndrome.  And they try to frighten everyone by Palin's stance against abortion.  The woman doesn't want to allow babies to be murdered!  Barack Obama and Joe Biden do.  Obama even voted in favor of infanticide while in the Illinois Senate.  Why is that not more frightening than Palins stance against abortion?

Once Palin was announced as the Republican VP, remember how journalists descended into Alaska like locusts, going through every dumpster, looking  through all the governmental records in a concerted effort to find anything - just anything - they could use to smear Palin with?  Well, they haven't found much.  "Troopergate"* as it has been called, seems to be the only minor blip on Palins record.  Supposedly, Palin had a personal vendetta against an Alaskan trooper who had once been married to her sister.  Palin eventually ended up firing the troopers boss, Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan,  for his failure to fire the trooper in the first place.   "Troopergate" led to an investigation of Palin for potentially abusing her power as Governor.  Please reference the entire report, from October 10, 2008 as to the findings from the "Troopergate" investigation.

If people would really look into the situation, the trooper in question (Mike Wooten)  drank beer (several times) in his squad car, ran down a wolf with a snowmobile (illegal), and tasered his own ten-year old stepson.  He also made numerous death threats to the Palin family.  Palin got rid the Public Safety Commissioner, Walt Monegan, for failing to fire the trooper in question.  (Would anyone want a trooper on the force who did such things?)  Yet, the left has made this about Palin wanting payback for a divorce situation involving her sister.  Not so, if one looks behind just what the mainstream media is reporting on.

The conclusion is that nothing is going to be done to Palin in regards to "Troopergate".  What was the point, other than to smear her?   Particularly interesting in the report on "Troopergate" is a blurb on page 8:     "Public safety commissioner Walt Monegan's refusal to fire Trooper Wooten was not the sole reason he was fired by Governor Sarah Palin, but it was likely a contributing factor to his termination as Commissioner of Public Safety.  In spite of that, Governor Palin's firing of Commissioner Monegan was a proper and lawful exercise of her constitutional and statutory authority to hire and fire executive branch department heads."

During Palin's service as Governor, she has taken on corrupt politicians - some from the Republican party - and had them kicked out of office.  She clearly has a strong sense of right and wrong.  She is smart and a quick learner, judging from how she has handled herself at McCain/Palin speaking events.  Watch how Palin puts a heckler in his place at a McCain/Palin rally:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZZpmzJu06M&feature=related

A "heartbeat away" from the Presidency, Palin is more than capable of leading this country.  (On the other hand, we have the actual "heartbeat" in Barack Obama, who is less experienced than Palin, but that's OK because....well.... because he's Barack Obama!!! )  Palin has also served to re-energize the Republican Party like never before.  That is clearly what the media and the left are terrified of.  By all reports - given the economy and war, Obama should be far ahead of McCain in the polls.  But Obama is not.  He cannot seal the deal.    At most on any given day, Obama leads McCain by a slim margin of 5 to 7 points.  This election is still up for grabs and having Palin in the picture has helped the Republicans stay in the race.   Hopefully Palin can help McCain seal the deal and win in November.

Getting back to Palin's "Troopergate" - let's call it what it was:  Governor Palin doing her job as Governor of the State of Alaska.

Now, how about looking at our own Governor, Jim Doyle?  If the mainstream media and liberals really wants to find a Governor who is ethically-challenged, Doyle is the poster boy!  Once an Attorney General, Doyle has shown us that he has chosen to thumb his nose at the law and do whatever it takes for political gain.  Does anyone really know about much about the following:

1)  Governor Doyle may have violated the state's ethics laws by accepting Packers tickets from  a firm engaged in lobbying.  The state Ethics Board announced that it was looking into  Doyle's acceptance of corporate skybox tickets for a Dec. 7th, 2003 game at Lambeau Field.  Later, this ruling was denounced, saying that Doyle did indeed work on state business while attending the Packers/Bears game.  There are still questions as to how "ethical" this practice is.  Please read the entire article - interesting to note that the story mentions our own Governor Doyle meeting with Tony Rezcko (yes, the Tony Rezcko currently doing time in a federal pen.  The Tony Rezcko who is a close friend of Barack Obama.).

2)   Governor Doyle's convention speech may have violated the state ethics code

3)  The Supreme Court ruled that Governor Doyle exceeded his authority when negotiating Indian Gaming compacts.

4)  Let's not forget our ethically-challenged Governor's campaign promise "not to raise taxes" if re-elected. Doyle's own words:  "Going forward, my mind will be open to every solution -- except one. We should not -- we must not -- and I will not -- raise taxes."   That promise was forgotten once Doyle was back in office.  In addition to increasing taxes, already Wisconsinites have seen huge increases in many fees.  For example, the vehicle registration fees increased from $55 to $75.   Fees for drivers licenses also increased by $10.

Jim Doyle could actually learn a thing or two from Sarah Palin on how to behave as a Governor.

*As a side note, does anyone recall originally what "Troopergate" was?  Let me refresh your memory - from Wikipedia:  "Troopergate is the popular name of an alleged scandal involving allegations by two Arkansas state troopers that they arranged sexual liaisons for then-governor Bill Clinton. The allegations by state troopers Larry Patterson and Roger Perry were first reported by David Brock in the American Spectator in 1993."

Funny how the title of this entry is "The left is terrified of Sarah Palin" yet you don't make any attempt to prove it, other than you saying so. The reality is that I feel sorry for Sarah Palin. Instead of being moral and just, she used her position for personal gain, and stepped on anyone who dared cross her. Now she's going to help cost McCain the election. The only people who are afraid of Palin are McCain and anyone who wants to elect him. In fact Palin has done more for the Obama campaign than she'll ever know. Keep your head in the sand and all that...

Chris:  Oh, but I have made attempts to prove it.  Why in the world did thousands of journalists head to Alaska to dig up dirt on Palin?  Why did they report over and over on her pregnant daughter - who elected to have her baby and marry the father?  Why bring up "troopergate" - which is about nothing?  Because they are scared.  The mainstream media and liberals do not like Sarah Palin because she brings strength to the Republican party and McCain's campaign.  They have gone all-out to smear her.  So far, it isn't working, because unlike Obama, Palin has nothing to hide.  Palin is a credible, honest, smart, patriotic, conservative woman.  Something the left abhors for some reason (probably the "conservative" and "patriotic" parts).  Imagine if Palin was a Dem and Obama had picked her - would they be slandering her as never before? NO.  They would be glorifying her.  However, right now, Palin puts Obama to shame.  He cannot compete because he hasn't done anything.  And having Palin - a VP candidate - outshine a Presidential candidate like Obama - just irks the left.  And it should.

I still can't figure out the whole "it just irks the left" thing. I haven't met anyone who is "irked" about her (though we all have a good chuckle when we talk about her antics!). I do hear a lot of people on the left and right who think that she's not suited for the job, but that's hardly a reaction that I'd call "irked". In fact, I don't recall anyone yelling "kill her" at any rallies or anything, like the extremist right-wingers like to yell about Obama. Boy, that must mean you guys are *really* scared! No, I think you're making that up. I think that you'd be happy if the left was "irked" by her, instead of what they really feel, but I know the truth is a bitter pill to swallow these days if you're a right-winger. I love the "gone all-out to smear her" line. McCain's campaign (and you) have elevated smearing to an artform. But I guess when there is nothing good you can say about McCain or his plans, you might as well make up things about Obama! But you're right, a teenager who is pregnant out of wedlock just isn't a story...especially the daughter of a Conservative VP nominee. Nope. Nothing to report there! Neither is a report that the same person abused her power as governor. Again, no big deal there! Now, Obama knowing someone who committed a crime when Obama was 8 old? BIG NEWS!!11!! No, I assure you, we aren't "irked" or "scared" at all by Palin. Like I said, we're glad she's running! I only hope that the trooper scandal doesn't affect her position as VP candidate. Heaven forbid they boot her and pick someone who is qualified...we may be in trouble then! The reverse psychology thing ain't working for your spin. Call this failure a success as much as you'd like. It won't change reality!

Your attempts have failed.

Chris:  Why is it that some lefties are just so arrogant?  It shows in your comment "although we have a good chuckle when we talk about her antics".  By the way, who is the "we", Chris?  You and the other four liberals in Lake Country?

I think that when a Presidential candidate has close ties to a domestic terrorist like  Bill Ayers, as well as convicted felon Tony Rezcko, and pals like Rev. Wright and Pflegger, that should be worriesome.  That's the kind of stuff that scares many people, including me.  Those are real stories - yet, the mainstream media tries so hard to ignore looking into any of that, or reporting on it.  Palin's pregnant daughter will not be leading the country.  Obama would.  Yet, the press chooses to go after Palin's daughter - story after story for quite a while, while completely ignoring Mr. Obama's friendships with former Weathermen  Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dorhn (who wish they could have bombed more!).  Which do you think merits more reporting?  A VP candidate's pregnant daughter or a Presidential candidate with close ties to terrorists?  Be honest.

October 13, 2008 7:16 AM

Chris Tarr

You say it's about the merits. You're absolutely right. Problem is, you define merits as something YOU think is important. Of course the media went to Alaska to check out Sarah Palin. Here is a person who was essentially an unknown before her nomination. Where do you think the press was going to go to get the scoop on her...the Republican press releases? Please. They go to the source. As far as I know, nobody "went after" Palin's daughter. They released the info, and the media reported on it. It is a big story, whether or not you agree. Maybe the lack of reporting on what you call "friendships with terrorists" is due to the fact that there isn't much there? No...couldn't be. How silly that I forget Amy's rule on media. When they report something bad about Conservatives, they're "liberal media". When they say something bad about Liberals it's "fair and balanced". When discussing Obama, you keep citing "close ties" to people. What about the Keating 5? McCain had "close ties" to them. What about "close ties" to the Alaskan Independence Party, who's goal is secession from the United States? Sarah Palin had "close ties" to them. The phrase "close ties" is misleading. But that's what happens when your goal is to smear someone. The truth becomes fuzzy, and dots get moved closer than they really are just so that you can connect them. I guess it's good that most folks don't seem to be buying the distortions that you in the extreme right are trying to feed. As for the "four other liberals in Lake Country"...yet another distortion. The pages here tell otherwise, but again you don't want to believe so you just make it up as you go. Arrogance? No. Just honesty. Which seems to be a foreign concept to you. Just keep waving your hands like "Baghdad Bob" and yelling "We have won! There is nothing to fear!" hoping that someone will come along and just believe you.

Your words: "That's the kind of stuff that scares many people, including me." October 10, 2008 LAKEVILLE, Minnesota – ... “I want to be president of the United States, and I don't want Obama to be,” he said. “But I have to tell you, I have to tell you, he is a decent person, and a person that you do not have to be scared as President of the United States.”

Amy, I'm glad Palin is running. She's solidified Obama's chances of becoming President. I hope she runs again in 2012! Palin is nothing more than a failed political tool. The McCain campaign has used her and abused her and even those in your own party have questioned her credentials. Here's what your own former supreme leader, Tommy Thompson said about McCain in yesterday's NY Times.... "Tommy Thompson, a Republican who is a former governor of Wisconsin, said it would be difficult for Mr. McCain to win in his state but not impossible, particularly if he campaigned in conservative Democratic parts of the state. Asked if he was happy with Mr. McCain’s campaign, Mr. Thompson replied, “No,” and he added, “I don’t know who is.” " Amy, your own former supreme leader is turning against you and the McCain/Palin ticket. When Republican's are known for their rank and file support of their own party, you must be very concerned about this news. I can tell you that Palin has not helped the Republican party stay in the race. She's only fired up the right wing base, like yourself. She has not appealed to female Clinton supporters and has not done a good job of appealing to independents. Amy, most American's aren't crazy right wingers and because of this, McCain is going to lose the election. I guess that's what happens when you're a "maverick" and pick a VP waaay out there in Alaska. You bethcya he's gonna lose!

I haven't heard anything about Palin's daughter since the first week she was announced as McCain's running mate.

It's sad when people fight for their party regardless of whether they deserve to continue in the White House or not. I like Bill Clinton, he didn't screw the country like Bush did, but if his party did what Bush's Party did the last 8 years I'd want the Dems out too. You don't DESERVE another chance in power until you can get your act together. here's hoping.

Chris, no clue as to what the nonMSM has to say. You are sooooo brainwashed. The left is terrified of Palin. Why do you think there is no, notta, zip, news about ACORN and the recent fraud found in Ohio. Tp attack Palin. One black man said ACORN had him register 72 times!!! And the captain of ACORN in NV. is a felon who was caught with indentify theft. Come to terms with reality man!!

Amy, I figured out why Obama and the leftists MSM fear Palin. It’s called the chosen one’s 3rd lie. Obama’s website and campaign headquarters have now said Obama has had no connection with ACORN. This is after the FBI caught more voter fraud from the liberal organization, ACORN. Obama not only gave about $1 million to ACORN, he taught students at ACORN, represented them as a lawyer and has ACORN volunteers on his campaign staff. Obama also voted for government funding of ACORN. No wonder no one in the US believes this election will be fair. This is a disgrace to me and the honest people of this country. What next, socialism?

Amy: Another smoke bomb dropped! Gov. Doyle as an issue to support Gov. Palin. What a stretch! Typical Strategy from the conservatives. When the heat gets uncomfortable on an issue, meaning the truth is about to come out, start another fire some place else to divert attention.

Disgusted- "I haven't heard anything about Palin's daughter since the first week she was announced as McCain's running mate." That's going to be a problem for Amy and the other extremists who are already trying to set up the media to be the fall guy for McCain's loss. The problem? The media doesn't seem to be all that biased. It's going to be hard to pin this one on anything else but the campaign and McCain's policies.

Amy L. Geiger-Hemmer

Chris and Disgusted:  Read my comment.  Regarding Sarah Palin's pregnant daughter, I said the following: "Yet, the press chooses to go after Palin's daughter - story after story for quite a while," which was indeed true.  During the first weeks that it was announced that Palin's daughter was pregnant - you couldn't pick up a newspaper or magazine without reading about it.  The story was constantly being reported on television.  I never said that such stories are still being reported.  I meant to point out how this story was seized upon by the usual suspects and over-reported for our benefit.

Now, how about some stories on Mr. Obama and ACORN?  Mr. Obama and Bill Ayers?  Mr. Obama and Tony Rezcko?  The press should be reporting on these stories with as much glee as they did Palin's daughter.  On the flip side, imagine if John McCain had worked for ACORN, funneled money ($800,000 no less!) to ACORN, served as a lawyer for ACORN?  Helped train workers for ACORN?  I am sure the press would find that newsworthy.

October 14, 2008 7:10 AM

Chris Tarr

I did read your comment. Apparently you did not read mine. It was a big story, whether or not you agree. If it were Obama's teenage daughter, it would have been a story then, too. An out-of-wedlock pregnant daughter of ANY candidate is big news, even bigger when that candidate is a vocal abstinance-only advocate. And even bigger when it's part of a constant stream of contradictions. Of course, if it was Obama's teenage daughter, you'd fake indignation at how he could let that happen, question his parenting skills, and praise the media for reporting this important information. But in "Amyland" reality is a much different thing, no? As for ACORN and Ayers, just keep trying. You can repeat it over and over (which you have) and it doesn't change the fact that it's all smoke and no fire. Again - all smoke. No fire. Now, how about the Keating 5 and Alaska Independence Party? You seem to want to ignore those connections. Anyway, good luck convincing anyone of these made up Obama = terrorist connections that you seem to think matter. Nobody else seems to think so. It's gotta be frustrating for you - working so hard on a smear only to find out that people are much smarter than you give them credit for. Instead of blindly believing you (which is your hope) they are actually doing the research themselves and not just digesting news from the right-wing "think-tanks" (there's a contradiction in terms!) and finding out that the more they look, the "thinner" these connections really are! Remember folks - in "Amyland", when you say something bad about a Conservative, you're a member of the "Liberal Media", but if you say something bad about a Democrat, you're "Fair and Balanced". I guess being an extreme right-winger means you can have your cake and eat it too!

Amy L. Geiger-Hemmer

In "Chrisland", is there any common sense?  Keating 5 - what was McCain found guilty of?  Nothing.  Alaska Independence Party?  Sarah Palin was NOT a member, no matter how often lefties want to insist she was.  Not true.  Obama and Ayers, on the other hand, were (are) buds.  Ayers started Obama's political career from his own living room. How do you dispute that, Chris?  Would you have chummed with Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn?  A woman who stated that sticking a fork in a pregnant woman's belly after she was murdered was "cool"?  Would you and your wife have Ayers and Dorhn over for dinner?  THese are they types of people  Obama associates with.  Domestic terrorists.  The truth is out there, Chris.  But in "Chrisland" you chose to remain ignorant.  Don't worry, be happy...
