After six frustrating losses to open the season, Oconomowoc's varsity football team tasted the sweet smell of success last Friday night.
Hosting Slinger in a Wisconsin Little Ten Conference game, the Raccoons scored two touchdowns in a span of 1:14 late in the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead at the internission en route to an extremely satisfying 30-0 win over the Owls.
The win was the first of the season for Cooney (1-6, 1-4). Two games remain in the season.
After Paul Swan scored on a 12-yard run with 1:49 left in the half to put OHS on top at 7-0, senior defensive back Alex Kay made the play of the game by interceptiing an errant Slinger pass and returning it 67 yards for a touchdown with just 35 seconds left in the half. Suddenly Cooney was on top by two scores and the route was on.
In the second half, Oconomowoc scored two touchdowns and a field goal to win going away.
Not only did the offense play well, but so did the Oconomowoc defense. Paul Williams had two interceptions and Chris Pierson had one in the game. Adam Gross came up with a fumble recovery in the final minute to preserve the shutout.
