Happy Danny Gokey Day!

With all the hoopla surrounding the American Idol finalist/local hero's visit, it might be easy to forget about the other major holiday this weekend.  You know, the one that celebrates the woman who brought you into this world (and can take you out of it if you don't shut that sass mouth).  If you haven't been to the florist yet, you'll be lucky to get a bouquet of hot pink carnations, and the jewelry stores are banking on procrastination.

Why stress over a typical gift guaranteed to get a mediocre response when you can get creative and really pull those heartstrings?  Donate an apron with a special message to your mother for the Lakes Gallery of Fine Art's "Aprons in the Wind" exhibit.  Aprons that honor special women will be on display outside the North Lake gallery through Monday, billowing in the breeze on a clothesline.  Other events that can pass as a Mother's Day gift:

  • Women are invited to a luncheon and boutique to benefit the Waukesha Women's Center and the SOS Inner City Ministry, 10 a.m. Saturday at the Golden Mast Inn.
  • Give mom a chance to glam up and enjoy cocktails, dinner and live entertainment at the Russian Romance Ball, Saturday evening at the Chenequa Country Club.
  • Take a stroll through a local farmers market, perusing local produce and handmade gift items, Saturday morning in Oconomowoc (St. Paul's Lutheran Church parking lot) or Delafield (city parking lot on Main Street).
  • Celebrate women and the strong, lifelong relationships they form during one of several weekend performances of "Steel Magnolias" at Theatre on Main in Oconomowoc.

For other weekend events, check out the Weekend Happenings blog.
