Wisconsin disaster aid exceeds $67 million

Over $67 million in federal funds is helping Wisconsin residents recover from floods and storms earlier this summer. 

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved $44.8 million in grants for housing and individual needs and the U.S. Small Business Administration has approved $22.4 million in low-interest loans for homeowners, renters and business owners, according to state and federal officials. 

By the numbers:

  • $39.5 million in Individual Assistance has been distributed in FEMA grants for repair and replacement of storm-damaged housing and for temporary housing.
  • $5.3 million in FEMA grants has been for other disaster needs such as transportation, medical and dental expenses, moving and storage fees, and replacement or repair of personal property.
  • $22.4 million has been approved by the U.S. Small Business Administrationin low-interest disaster loans to homeowners, renters and business owners.
  • 37,463 residents have registered for assistance in the 30 Wisconsin counties declared eligible for individual disaster aid
  • 34,014 home inspections have been completed
  • 9,474 individuals have visited Wisconsin Disaster Recovery Centers

"Anyone whose property was damaged by the storms and ongoing flooding between June 5 and July 24 in the 30 declared counties has until Sept. 15 to register for assistance," said Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator Johnnie Smith. "We urge residents not to miss out on available assistance."

Residents can still register or update their information by calling 1-800-621-FEMA from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. or online 24 hours a day at www.fema.gov until the Sept. 15 deadline. 

Homeowners, renters and business owners can receive information about SBA disaster loans and get help with the application process by calling 1-800-659-2955 or by visiting www.sba.gov


 

FEMA disaster assistance totals $44 million dollars in Wisconsin

While the deadline to register for disaster help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been extended to Sept. 15, the state has already seen 36,648 registrations, said FEMA public information officer Tom Mullins. 

In Wisconsin, $44 million dollars has been approved for housing assistance, $3 million dollars of which is in Waukesha County, Mullins said. 

The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved $20 million dollars in loans statewide.   

Residents affected by storms and flooding can register from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day to by calling 1-800-621-FEMA; individuals and business owners can also register for help online at www.fema.gov until the Sept. 15 deadline.

Disaster Recovery Center transitions to Loan Outreach Center

Waukesha County's Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Disaster Recovery Center  has transitioned to a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loan Outreach Center.

From July 28-Aug. 13 anyone registered for disaster assistance can get one-on-one access to SBA and FEMA representatives from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, at the Waukesha County Communications Center, 1621 Woodburn Road, Waukesha. Federal agency personnel will be on hand to answer questions about the application process and to get more information on FEMA disaster programs.

Anyone affected by flooding is urged to call FEMA's toll-free helpline, (800) 621-3362, to start the registration process (individuals with speech or hearing impairments can call TTY (800) 462-7585) or register online at www.fema.gov. Flood victims have until Aug. 13, 2008 to apply for  federal relief under President Bush's disaster declaration for Waukesha County. Both registration services are operational 24 hours.


 

Waukesha County Disaster Recovery Center to close July 26

The Waukesha County Recovery Center will be open from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily until July 26; however FEMA Public Information Officer Tom Mullins says the Waukesha Center will close at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Anyone affected by the recent disaster should call FEMA's toll-free helpline, 1-800-621-FEMA. 

According to Mullins, as of yesterday, 34,513 people have registered in the state of Wisconsin, 1,578 of those in Waukesha County.

$39 million has been approved for housing assistance and 31,000 home inspections have been completed thus far by FEMA.

Town of Mukwonago - FEMA representatives visited Mukwonago this afternoon, surveying damage in the Country Bliss subdivision and meeting with local officials.

They passed out fliers encouraging homeowners, renters and business owners who have sustained losses or damages to call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or apply online at www.fema.gov.

When you apply for disaster assistance, they ask that you have the following available:

-Social security number

-Daytime telephone number

-Current mailing address where you are staying

-Address and zip code of the damaged property

-Directions to the damaged home or property

-Private insurance information, if available.


 

Mukwonago Town Board calls special meeting

The Mukwonago Town Board will meet Friday, June 20 at 6:30 p.m. for a special town board meeting to discuss and act upon the Country Bliss flooding problems.

The Town Hall Meeting Room was filled with concerned residents of the subdivision at Wednesday night's board meeting, who asked the board to consider turning the pumps back on and for help in determining both short and long term solutions to the flooding problem.

The Board is scheduled to report on their Friday meeting with FEMA as well as provide an update on the status of acquiring easements needed should they decide to turn the pumps back on.
