Waukesha - Alan Randall, who killed two Summit Town Police officers in 1975, is seeking his release from a state mental hospital.
Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Lee S. Dreyfus Wednesday ordered two court appointed psychiatrists examine Randall, who in January 1975 shot and killed officers Robert Atkins Jr. and Wayne Olson as they sat in their squad outside of the Summit Town Hall. He was 16 years old at the time of the murders.
In 1975, a judge found Randall not guilty by reason of mental disease and sentenced him to the state mental health institution after a jury found him guilty of committing the murders.
Randall suffered from severe paranoid schizophrenia and was not responsible for his actions on the day of the murders, according to the court ruling.
During that same time, Randall was found guilty of committing several other burglaries and was acquitted of the Jan. 11, 1975, murder of Ronald Hoeft, 43, of Summit.
The psychiatrists are to report back to Dreyfus in October as to the whether the evaluations are complete or they need more time. Dreyfus set the next hearing for Oct. 14.
This is the third time Randall is seeking his release from a state hospital having done so in 1992 and in 1996.
In August 1996, after a six day trial, a jury voted 5-1 to return Randall to a state mental health institution.
Randall is currently being held in the Mendota State Hospital in Madison.
